In the paper, kinds of the polymerization methods of acrylamide were discussed, and the characters of water dispersion were given. Meanwhile, the polymerization mechanism was interpreted. With discussing the application and market conditions of the polyacrylamide, it could be concluded that the water dispersion polyacrylamide was a new type of environment-friendly agent and had a very bright future.With the acrylamide (AM) and the 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) as the main raw materials, the poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic sodium) (PSAMPS) as the stabilizer, and the ox-reductant and V044 azo-compounds as the complex initiators, the water-soluble polymer dispersion was prepared with the multi-stage polymerization of water dispersion in an aqueous solution of the ammonium sulfate.The effects of varying factors of the molar ratio of AMPS/AM, the concentration of monomer, the concentration of ammonium sulfate, the concentration of stabilizer, the concentration of initiator, the whisk time, the stirring speed and the pH value on the molecular weight, particle size, particle size distribution of the dispersion polymer and the conversion of monomers were investigated, respectively. By the orthogonal experiment, the optimum conditions of the synthesis were determined as follows: the molar ratio of AM/AMPS: 15/85, the concentration of monomers: 20%, the dosage of V044: 4.0×10-4, the dosage of K2S2O8: 4.0×10-4, the initiation temperature: 50℃; the dosage of (NH42SO4: 20%; whisk time: 7h.The dispersion copolymers were characterized with Fourier Transform Infra-Red, the Transmission Electronic Mirror, the Laser Particle-size Analyzer and the Laser Light Scattering Instrument, respectively. The dilution swelling properties of water polyacrylamide dispersion were discussed in detail.
