Computer technology and Internet communication have been developed rapidly since the end of 20th century, which made a lager communication bandwidth was demanded synchronously. In the circumstances, the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology was brought forward and applied widely, whereas, the development of WDM systems put forward a series of advanced qualifications about laser sources of optical communication. A new laser source of optical communication, Erbium-Ytterbium codoped phosphate glass waveguide laser that was provided with more prominent performance than semiconductor distribution feedback (DFB) laser, has been investigated globally from 1990s. The laser can meet many rigorous demands of WDM systems. The 1.54μm laser emitted by the laser accords with the interrelated standard of International Telecommunications Union (ITU), therefore, a splendent foreground can be predicted about this kind of laser in future optical communication. So far all study work about this kind of laser was performed in laboratories, arisen fanbricated methods and achieved laser performance still were not suitable for commerce application. In this paper, some investigation and design as following.have been carried out on Er-Yb codoped phosphate glass waveguide laserFirst, three primary performance parameters of Er-Yb waveguide laser pump threshold power; output power and slope efficiency have been commulated and analysed theoretically based on Er3+-Yb3+ energy configuration; rate equation of stable state and transmitting equation. The influences of Er-Yb ions concentration; enabled waveguide length; light dot radius of signal light and pump light; reflectivity of output lens on three above parameters have been researched.Second, the mode fields of a strip waveguide and some slab waveguides have been simulated by applying finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The curvature radius; vicinity coupling; transition loss and power attenuation of a S-shape bend waveguide have been analysed numerically by employing wide angle finite-difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM), as well as the coupling loss of optical fiber and waveguide. In addition, the framework of the S-shape waveguide laser has been
