Analysis of Chinese Auctioneers’ Language

The auction industry has only a short history of 15 years in China. This enterprise has passed its initial stage and become more regular and mature. As the official hosts in auctions, auctioneers play a very important role. Professional auctioneers should be proficient in bidding and quoting bids in order to sell the lots to the bidder who gives highest bid.Language is the most often used tool for auctioneers. At present, there is not much research about auctioneers’ language in China. This is a fairly new study and needs a systematic analysis. This thesis, applying the relevant theories of stylistics, pragmatics, communication and so on, does a detailed analysis from the contextual, linguistic and functional aspects in order to find the general features of auctioneers’ language. This paper intends to be a comprehensive and thorough application of the various linguistic theories relevant to auctioneering language learned during the graduate period.The relevant data are either recorded from auctions by the author or from the video which was also recorded totally from the auction scenes without change in order to show the objectiveness and truthfulness of the analysis.
