Dynamic Monitoring of Urban Heat Island in Xiamen, Based on TM/ETM+

In studies of urban heat islands, how to monitor and calculate the surface temperature is the most important part. In this paper, with the support of RS and GIS,the coastal open city-Xiamen, was taken as a case study.We selected and performed four different algorithms inversion calculation on the ETM+ images of October 14,2001 and the TM images of November 5,2006 to derive surface temperature.The results of inversion was compared with the brightness temperature to select the most suitable algorithm for the study area. The single-window algorithm of QIN Zhi-hao was proved the best one.Based on the inversed surface temperature from the single-window algorithm,we utilized mean-standard deviation method to divide the study area into four land surface temperature, respectively,4,5 and 6, and then compared and analyzed the results of the classification to get a most reasonable temperature classication and thus identify the boundry of the urban heat island. Finally, we examined the spatial distribution of urban heat island characteristics and spatial and temporal evolution law corresponding mitigation measures were also proposed in the end.
