The food packaging industry in China developed a lot after the reform and opening. And the packaging industry which meets the demand of Chinese market is gradually forming. However, Chinese packaging design is restricted or influenced by foreign styles. Along with the huge import of foreign products and cultures, great impact will took on the packaging design. Under such background, we should reflect on the value of our traditional culture and seek a way of development for modern food packaging industry from the treasury of traditional culture.With reference to the traditional culture, the precondition is to fully understand and command the features of traditional culture. Only by deep researches on the cultural features of traditional packaging art, features of materials, visual features etc, can we make good and reasonable use of them. It is true that China traditional food packaging materials vary from natural plants to mental and paper, covering a large range of things. Although there are rich materials of traditional culture, we should still follow some principles and methods instead of simple copy and duplication of traditional patterns and materials. The right solution is to re-design the elements of traditional culture from both spiritual and material perspectives by using modern design concept and methods, so that the traditional cultural elements will meet the demand of modern esthetics and functions, and serve for the modern design. This is also the right way for the development of localized food packaging design.
