Beginning with the history of Prescribed Medicine and OTC Management, the paper analyses the historical data of China OTC market and all sorts of influence factors, and on this basis, makes forecast of the development and competitive condition in China OTC market from the year 2003 till 2007 by mathematical statistics, illustrating the prospects of the whole OTC market, each local market and each sector of OTC drugs.In general, the conclusions of this paper is summed up as follows:1. During the forecast period, China OTC market will continue to grow up with the drive from the occurent healthcare system reform and price competition and distribution expansion, which are triggered by the reform. In the future, the prices of OTC drugs will reduce while the quality of OTC drugs will be improved. On the whole, the infrastructure of China OTC market will change little.2.In the forecast period, South China will record the fastest growth in the OTC healthcare market among all the regions in the country with the growth of 9.3% a year on average. In Mid China, the market will witness greater participation of foreign-funded enterprise. East China will continue to be the largest local market with better outlook for quality medicine.3.In the forecast period, tonics and bottled nutritive drinks will constitute the largest subsector in vitamin and dietary supplement sector, but they will face greater regulation while child-specific vitamins and dietary supplements will be the most dynamic subsector. In analgesics sector, topical analgesics will be theABSTRACTlargest subsector, while child-specific analgesics will record the fastest growth. In cough, cold and allergy remedies sector, because of erratic weather pattern and increasing pollution level, demand will remain strong although pace of growth will be slower, North and Northeast China will remain the largest market of this sector. In digestive remedies, indigestion and heartburn remedies will continue to create the largest sales while laxatives will be the most dynamic subsector. Hemorrhoid treatments and vaginal antifungals will stimulate the growth of medicated skin care sales on the whole and the dynamism will be attributed to aggressive marketing and increased health consciousness. Both smoking cessation aids and eye care products have promising outlook.
