For a long time , metonymy is seen as a rhetorical device , is an alternative relationship between words . Since the 1980s , due to the development of cognitive linguistics , metonymy is considered to be the means of human thinking and cognitive . 1997 , Thornburg Panther , indirect speech act scene analysis and metonymy method of combining research , metonymy theory under the framework of cognitive linguistics and language learning under the framework of speech act theory provides a new perspective . They believe that the speech act scene stage can turn refers to the other stages in the entire scene or scenes , such metonymy is not limited to the vocabulary level , but rose to the sentence and discourse level , further evidence of metonymy exist in human cognitive mechanisms , and is an important means of human understanding of the objective world . In this thesis metonymic to Thornburg Panther speech act theory based analysis instruction class speech act metonymy politeness , summed up the the request class speech acts and commitments class speech act mode of reasoning , and use this mode of reasoning to explain linguistic communication misunderstood phenomenon .
