The Contrast of the Humor Approach in Chinese and English Speech Communications

Humor, as one of the language arts, is the product of human wisdom and civilization, which goes everywhere in our lives. Witty humor that brings laughter and joy in a relaxed way not only helps to balance the conversational atmosphere, ease the contradiction, but also reflects the individual’s intelligence and charisma, as interpersonal communication and an integral part of social life.Besides, humor is a cultural phenomenon, with a national character, it is often associated with social values, cultural practices and religious beliefs are closely related, therefore, different ethnic humor reflects the different social and cultural connotations. For foreign language learners, or those who are in cross-cultural communication, because of differences in cultural background, some of alien humor can not be understood by both parties, moreover, people often fail to feel the expected humorous effects in the process of communication. Therefore, understanding the humor would have to combine social and cultural factors. There are many researches on humor at home and abroad, but most are to reveal how the language of humor comes from the perspective of cognitive, there are few to study the humorous language from the perspective of cross-cultural communication. In this thesis, humorous method in speech communication between English and Chinese are compared, and discussed mainly from the perspective of the language and culture including the cultural differences between Britain and China.The introduction briefly describes the research paper, significance and value of research methods and sources and the Collection of the corpus.The first chapter introduces the method of verbal communication features and functions of humor.In the second chapter, the theories of Western humor are compared. Traditional Western theory has three categories: location of / contempt of the release of theory, incongruity theory / lack of coordination theory, although the lack of systematic theory in Chinese, the Chinese comic artists are also helpful to create humor in their own way.In the third chapter, the similarity of humor in the verbal communication is described, and also the speech figure means for creating a humorous effect is compared one by one, through puns, irony, analogy, hyperbole, parody. What is more, with more humorous examples, the thesis shows: English and Chinese have a similar place in the creation of humorous language.In the fourth chapter, the differences of humor are contrasted by studying the contents and functions of humor in English and Chinese verbal communication. And the root reason causing the cultural differences of Chinese and English is explored in the purpose of drawing on the comparative analysis of English humor, language and deepening people’s understanding of western culture, so that different countries and different races can share the humor and bring laughter and joy to better cross-cultural communication .The fifth chapter is the conclusion. This article summarizes some of the points also raises a number of shortcomings in the study as well as some suggestions for further study.In addition, through this research, it is expected that people in China will learn from the merits of Western humorous language to use and disseminate humor language better in real life.
