AIS is a vessel monitoring system, and part of the wireless mobile communication network areas, the network performance is a key issue in the research and application of AIS. This paper briefly describes the shipborne automatic identification system development overview and its system structure and principle, and thus that AIS Communication Theory analyzes the communication principle of self-organized time division multiple access (STDMA), and try to build in a set of AIS network performance evaluation. Then, based on these principles and indicators, the AIS international standards established by international organizations such as the IMO, IEC and ITU based AIS network throughput performance, monitoring capacity and network radius performance in-depth analysis and research and draw the following conclusions: 1) When the case of AIS stations get totally organizations, and the load is less than 60.5%, and its throughput is almost 100%. In incomplete tissue and the load is not necessarily less than 60.5% of the cases, according to the distance of the distance of the AIS station its monitoring range from near to far divided into three regions, namely the protection area, the recognition area and confusion region. Within the protected zone when the load is high (up to 500%), still good throughput performance can be obtained, thereby ensuring the subject of close objects visible. Therefore, AIS throughput performance to meet the maritime needs. 2) Under normal circumstances, the monitoring capacity of the the VTS District waters of AIS 814, in the area of ??non-VTS tube sailing the waters of AIS monitoring capacity of 246. Therefore, the application of AIS is able to meet the requirements of the number of ships in the waters each. But in the future or in very heavy traffic and the waters, it is necessary to take some measures. 3) AIS network radius is limited by the the AIS VHF band radio waves straight propagation characteristics. Therefore, it is mainly related to the height with AIS station antenna, under normal circumstances the ship AIS station monitoring range of 25 nautical miles, the VTS AIS station monitoring a range of 45 nautical miles. Two ships on the case of the early, the range may be weakened, but generally not more than one sea miles. In addition, when the a synchronization source loss situation occurs, the scope of monitoring will also be affected, but it can still meet the the AIS monitoring range requirements within three hours after the synchronization source is lost. Therefore, under normal circumstances, the AIS monitoring range is able to meet the nautical needs.
