In the present study, a work was done on the design of the copolymer structureand the synthesis of copolymers (PADS series) of acrylamide (AM),2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide(DMAM) by free radical micellar copolymerization. The optimum condition wasattained by the method of onefold and orthogonal test. Polymer structure and thermalstability was characterized by FTIR, element analysis and thermogrammetric analysis.It was proved that the copolymers were the objective and had good thermal stabilitywhich was attributed to introduce the stable sulfonic function. The effect of total concentration of monomers, the amount of DMAM andAMPS,the concentration of copolymers, small molecule electrolyte, shear rate andtime and temperature which affect the viscosity behavior of tripolymers was discussed.It was proved that there had an an optimum amount of total monomers concentration,DMAM and AMPS and copolymers had good salt, shear and temperature resistance,which could be used in polymer flooding. It was found from the effect of SDS that SDS interfered with the assosiative ofpolymer intermolecules and increased the electrostatic exclude which deduced thedecrease of viscosity of polymers. SEM and AFM were adopted to observe thesolution without and with SDS in order to explore the solution microstructure. The properties of dilute solution of copolymers were tested in order tounderstand the molecule morphology and the interaction of functions in molecules.The samples of Daqing and PADS as a function of salt concentration were compared.It was clear that PADS had more potential at high salt concentration though it was notgood as the samples of Daqing at low salt concentration.
