The famous Chinese folktale Gou Geng Tian (A Dog Ploughs up the Field) has the same motif with the Japanese folktale Kai Hua Ye Ye (The grandpa who can make flower abloom), both of which are about a virtuous man who gets a supernatural dog which brings miracle, and a greedy man who tries to imitate the former one but always fails and gets punished. This kind of story, which comes from the agrarian society, transformed from a story between two brothers to a story between two old men who are neighbors when it was spread to Japan from China. The reason of the transformation is that the evolvement of folktales is dominated by the culture and system of the society. That is, the Chinese system which is characterized by partible inheritance and the Japanese system which is characterized by primogeniture. The origin and the transformation of the two different systems are related to the political and economic history of each country and are also closely concerned with the different structures of the family. And the deep-seated reason is the different ideas of family that is based on all the elements mentioned above. That is to say, the Chinese family pays more attention to the patrilineal kinship and genealogy, and weakens the economic relationship inside the family. While the Japanese family is an economic community based on the property of the family, which attaches more importance to the economic relationship. The difference in these ideas can be verified by the different attitude and thoughts to kinship, ancestor and filial piety. These attitude and thoughts affect and model the different tendency of the way of thinking and the behavior in many social behaviors of the Chinese people and the Japanese people. Thus, some problems such as the difference between the succession systems of the Chinese and Japanese family property can be clearly explained. And furthermore, the inner reason of the difference between the two countries in the economic development and the structure of the society can also be explained. And this is the significance of the comparison research between the two stories.
