With the development of mobile communication technologies and the increasing demand for the wireless applications from the consumers, Mianyang Mobile Communication has worked out, on the basis of the existing GPRS network, the plan for initiating the EGPRS network that is a transitional technology between the second generation mobile communication and the third generation mobile communication, to provide better wireless multimedia services for the consumers. EGPRS is roughly the GSM system that incorporates a new modulating method, that is an advanced multi-time-slot operation and the 8PSK modulating technology. As the 8PSK technology can increase the signal space for GMSK modulating technology used by the GSM network by 4 times, the network data service rate is increased greatly.This paper describes the study on the engineering application of the EGPRS network initiated by Mianyang Mobile Communication. Three emphases influencing the configuration and the optimization of the EGPRS network are determined after elaborating three aspects as follows, i.e., the EGPRS technology, the impact of the EGPRS on existing GSM network, and the key factors influencing the performance of the EGPRS network:1. The optimization method of PCU.As a unit of BSC, PCU is responsible for processing the GPRS-specific business. The capacity of PCU is one of the serious bottlenecks limiting the EGPRS networking. In this paper, the optimization method for PCU is developed by analyzing the configuration of PCU data, the adjustment of the PILTIMER parameters and the configuration of the FPDCH channels;2. The optimization method of Abis interface.The Abis interface is one of the important interfaces in the EGPRS network, whose capacity configuration will directly influence the performance of the EGPRS network. In this paper, the interface capacity with different configurations is worked out, which can be used as the data base for the routine services and the network optimization; 3. The optimization method of Gb interface.The Gb interface is the data transmission path between PCU and the SGSN, whose bandwidth configuration will directly influence users’perception of EGPRS network and possibly influence the data flow of the entire BSC. The recommended capacity of the Gb interface is calculated through using a formula.Moreover, the configuration of the wireless network is one of the key aspects constituting the EGPRS network construction. In this paper, the principles on which the PDCH is configured in various networks and the EGPRS is configured on carrier frequency are put forward, which can be used as the referable basis for the optimization of the actual EGPRS network.The study in this research project and the tests and measurements during the engineering implementation have shown that the EGPRS plan adopted at present is improved significantly in terms of data transmission rate and the service quality compared to the former GPRS network and can, on the whole, meet the requirements of the existing customers on the data application.
