The thesis studies the American containment on the Soviet Union during the cold war in the energy sector and its effect on the politics and economy of the Soviet Union.American containment in the energy sector includes embargo、linkage and economic warfare. In the early cold war period, American containment system took shape. Meanwhile, the energy industry of the Soviet Union became recovery. From the mid-1950s, the energy trade between the Western Europe and the Soviet Union developed rapidly. But the 1962-64 oil trade sanction on the Soviet Union impeded the development of energy trade. In 1970s, the USA adopted the linkage strategy to make the Soviet Union concession in the SALT、human rights、Vietnam、dissents and so on. The energy trade became an important tool in the linkage strategy. During the new cold war period, the Reagan administration made a plan of economic warfare, and the sanction against the Siberian natural gas pipeline and secret action made the hard currency income of the Soviet Union decreased sharply. The reform became harder for the Gorbachov government. The Soviet Union collapsed soon.Although American containment in the energy sector varied during different periods, they attacked the Soviets’economic and political system. This study is valuable for us to analyze the economic containment and the U.S. -Russia relation in today’s world.
