On Promoting of the Principal’s Curriculum Leadership

The principal as curriculum leader is critical for the school curriculum reform and practice, but it still encounters realistic predicament according to the existing researches. The principal as curriculum leader is not only administrative or technical issues, principals’professional quality may also affects the implementation of leadership' dissertation">curriculum leadership. In other words,the principal’s curriculum leadership has an effect on the achievement of the school curriculum leaders. Therefore, from the perspective of leadership, the author tries to reveal the problems and causes by investigating the present condition of the principal’s curriculum leadership, explore practical strategies for principals to promote the curriculum leadership on the basis of theoretical analysis, and hopes to provide help for principals.On the basis of interpreting the concept, this paper firstly investigates the present condition of the principal’s curriculum leadership, and discovers that the principal’s curriculum leadership has good performance: principals have correct self-role cognition subjectively, and gradually realize that the principal as curriculum leader is a kind of professional behaviour, all of which establish the foundation for promoting the principal’s curriculum leadership. But it also confronts with a lot of problems which are mainly in consciousness, knowledge, ability and action.Then this paper analyzes the causes that bring about the problems of principal’s curriculum leadership. The process of the principal as curriculum leader involves interaction between people and environment, so the reasons why the principal’s curriculum leadership confronts with a lot of problems include educational system, ideology and culture, principal itself, as well as supporting environment.Finally, this paper explores how to promote the principal’s curriculum leadership from the perspective of theory and practice respectively. On one hand, there’s a great need for theoretical guidance to promote the principal’s curriculum leadership, thus this paper mainly analyzes the theories which affect the principal’s curriculum leadership, such as distributed leadership, principal professionalization,‘in itself’and‘for itself’, open culture. On the other hand, the principal’s curriculum leadership is gradually promoted in practice, so this paper tries to put forward some practical strategies from four aspects: reviewing the idea and the sense, facilitating principal’s professional development, granting right and increasing energy, accumulating phronesis. There’s still a long way to promote the principal’s curriculum leadership, which need all of us to reflect comprehensively and explore deeply. The author hopes that more and more scholars will take part in this field.
