The Status and Correlation Research on Social Support and Self-esteem of College Students in Changchun

In recent years, scholars have studied the impact of social support on physical and mental health extensively. Social support is the effect of various social relations to individuals on social network. Favorable social support is advantageous to health. On one hand, social support protects the individuals under the stress condition, that is, the cushioning effect on stress, and on the other hand the maintenance of the general good emotional experience is of great significance. Social support has indirect protective function to health because it serves as the cushion factor of the psychological stimulation, and also maintains the good emotional experience, which is beneficial to health. Especially that college students is a special group, and some research indicates that the psychological support from their family or important persons plays a vital role in their study and daily life, and affects their psychological adjusting level.Self-esteem is a critical question in self-cognition study of contemporary psychology. The study of self-esteem is the theoretical premise that helped to correctly grasp the relationship between scientific advancement and human development. It is an effective approach that helped to resolve the inner contradictions of feeling and stress in life. And, it is also the scientific evidence to transform the education idea in universities and realize the education goal of“putting people first”.The purpose of this article is to provide college students a guidance on understanding and evaluating themselves, and an evidence to resolve their issues on psychological healthy, and provide the society a reference on resolving psychological issues of college students. The article mainly includes the following five parts:First part is question proposal. Based on the early research results, the author proposed the overall concept from a new angle of view and elaborate the theoretical value and practical significance.The second part is literature review. The author analyzed the concept, theoretical basis , measurement methods and the importance of social support and self-esteem in a comprehensive and systematic manner. Based on this, the author put forward that social support is the support provided by the surrounding individuals, perception and evaluation of the support activities. While self-esteem is a positive evaluation on the individual’s own value, and a internal self-cognitive information processing activity in which the individuals realizing their value.The third part is the research method. With the participants coming from Changchun college students, the author used The Individual Situation Meter, the Social Support Scale and The State Self-Esteem Scale. The statistical methods are independent sample T-test the single factor variance analysis and the Pearson correlation analysis.The fourth part is the results and analysis. The author investigated and analyzed the situation and relationship of social support and self-esteem, adopting a large scale of sample college students as subjects. The results of the research demonstrated: (1) The social support of college students in Changchun has no remarkable difference in grade, but has significant differences in gender, profession, family structure and sources.(2) The self-esteem of college students in Changchun has no remarkable difference in grade and sources, but has significant differences in gender, profession and family structure. (3) The self-esteem and social support of college students in Changchun are significantly correlated, which indicates that the more utilization of support, the higher level of social support, the higher the degree of self-esteem.The fifth part is discussion and analysis. Based on the literature review and data analysis results, the author discussed and elucidated synthetically the situation of social support and self-esteem of college students in Changchun, and analyzed their significant differences. Meanwhile, the author also discussed and re-examined the whole research. At the end of this paper, the author proposed several intervention strategies on how to upgrade the level of social support and self-esteem of college students.
