Metonymy and Discourse: a Semiotic-Cognitive Approach

Metonymy is a common phenomenon in human language and thought. For a long time, metonymy Perspective study is mainly based on rhetoric, structural linguistics, cognitive linguistics and language use. Metonymy research methods vary, but people are more concerned about metonymy role in the lexical level, while ignoring the metonymy functions at the level of discourse. Only a small number of scholars have tried metonymy and discourse integration of a system, a complete theory and interpretation of metonymy played an important role in the generation and interpretation of verbal communication. In other words, the level of discourse metonymy neither get enough attention and fully explored in any linguistic schools. This paper argues that metonymy phenomenon only placed in the framework of discourse analysis in order to obtain sufficient research and understanding. So far, the studies undertaken by the symbolic and cognitive perspective on the relationship between metonymy and discourse still rare, which is the starting point and the characteristics of this study. This paper argues that semiotics and cognitive linguistics integrate research in metonymy, in order to achieve the purpose of successfully generate and understand verbal communication. The theoretical framework of this study is reflected in a more comprehensive and detailed exposition of both symbolic and cognitive metonymy essential. Specifically, the interdisciplinary characteristics of this study can be summarized as the following three aspects: first, to explore the semiotics of Saussure (1916/1983) and Peirce (1931-58), and refers to as the instructions and the alleged transfer Yu phenomenon. Metonymy symbolic nature embodied in turn the metaphorical refers to the characterization covers three areas of knowledge, things knowledge, conceptual knowledge, and knowledge in the form of (language). The theory is that metonymy is a conceptual phenomenon and cognitive processes operating within the same idealized cognitive model. Third, analysis correction discourse metonymy concept of Al-Sharafi (2004), the model and the knowledge structure model of discourse metonymy, in order to help build the theoretical framework of this study. These interdisciplinary theoretical principles to build a metonymy and discourse symbol - cognitive model, especially for Verbal Communication Cohesion and Coherence provides a full and proper explanation. This study used a qualitative research design, focus to describe and explain the specific social and cultural scene in the naturally occurring phenomenon of metonymy. The corpus of this study comes from a real Chinese discourse, the corpus collected more flexible. Study questions are generalized assumptions, gradually become clear as the study progresses. The paper proposes and argues the following points assumptions, to derive a metonymic symbols and discourse - the cognitive model. (1) the nature of metonymy phenomenon is symbolic and cognitive; (2) metonymy symbolic and cognitive produce characterization of metonymy ideographic relations, this characterization throughout the three areas of ontology, epistemology and language. (3) Based on the characterization of the the ideographic relationship of metonymy, the establishment of a symbol - the cognitive model metonymy and discourse. (4) metonymy and discourse symbol - cognitive model helps Cohesion and coherence in the interpretation of verbal communication. These assumptions are closely related to understanding metonymy build verbal communication convergence and the development of a coherent feature provides a reasonable explanation. Naturally occurring corpus the metonymy and discourse is particularly necessary and important. The author provides accumulated in the long-term process of reading in English and Chinese words as real corpus to build the important role played by the convergence and the development of a coherent analysis of metonymy in verbal communication. As the Chinese have not yet been given sufficient attention in this field of research, the authors chose to use the Chinese language to discuss real corpus analysis of the relationship between metonymy and discourse. This study has the following aspects of the theoretical value. First, the study from the perspective of metonymy provide further evidence to support Halliday (1985) of the three language function theory, namely the concept of function, interpersonal function and textual function, especially the discourse function of metonymy were the focus of analysis. Secondly, this study demonstrated metonymy as the meaning of the cognitive process, not only exist in the vocabulary level also exist at the level of discourse. Metonymy a unique way to fulfill the function it build verbal communication convergence and the development of a coherent, in order to supplement and improve Halliday and Hasan (1976) theory of communicative discourse ignore the dynamic process of cognitive factors. Again, the further development of the concept of Al-Sharafi (2004) Discourse metonymy, proposed a metonymic discourse symbol - the cognitive model. In this study, a real English-Chinese discourse corpus, proved metonymy mechanism played an important role in the generation and interpretation of verbal communication. Summary of of Verbal Communication transit evident function of a more innovative and challenging research topic. In order to establish a more systematic metonymy and discourse studies, scientific theoretical system, the paper pointed out that future research should encourage more empirical research to provide the theoretical basis for more on the discourse function of metonymy. Other issues such as the concept of genre and language domains should be included in the study.
