With the increasing impact of postcolonial theories in the world during the recent years, there came a rise of postcolonial translation theories and hybridity in translation has gradually gained the attention of translation studies scholars both China and abroad. Postcolonial translation theories pay much attention to the unequal position and power between languages and cultures and sees translation as the natural production of the contact between any two languages and cultures. Such theories value the hybrid text and hold that the hybridity can help reduce the cultural hegemony in cross-cultural communication. The hybridity theory makes us see better the nature of translation, the relation between translation and politics and the requirement for a good translation.Based on the postcolonial hybridity theory in translation studies, this thesis takes Lin Yutang’s translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji (Six Chapters of A Floating Life) as an example to discuss the hybridity phenomena in it from linguistic aspect, cultural aspect and literary aspect. By means of analysis, the author discovers that Lin Yutang uses domestication and foreignization skillfully, making sure that those important cultural information of the source text is transferred to the target readers and making his translation owning the characters of hybridity. Lin Yutang not only succeeds in fulfiling his objective of introducing the calm life of a common Chinese couple to the Westners, but also successfully brings the Chinese culture into English at the same time. Lin Yutang’s translation guarantees the readability and makes great contribution to the transmittion of Chinese culture to the world as well. The author’s analysis shows that hybridity plays a very important role in promoting the culture communication, banishing the hegemony of the strong culture, and optimizing the target language and culture. By adopting the strategy of hybridity, the ideology of the weak culture can enter into the strong culture, and then makes the readers of the strong culture realize that their exist some other cultures in the world and the strong culture can thus be influenced. The present study has some enlightenments for the English translation of the Chinese literary works. Hybridity has a positive role in resisting cultural hegemony and the ethnocentrism as well. When translating from the weak culture to the strong one, the translator has to take into his or her consideration of the degree of hybridity. It is not proper to persue hybridity only by means of foreignization and especially radical foreignization. To translate literary works like Fu Sheng Liu JI into English, the translator has to make his or her translation moderately hybridized to achieve the due effect.
