The boarding schools for left-behind children have helped to solve the problem of left-behind children schooling, one of the major worries of migrant workers. And the boarding schools also embody the care and concern from the government and the Party to the left-behind children in the rural areas. As a part of the policy which benefits people, boarding schools reflect the superiority of the socialist system.In recent years, the ministry of education has attached great importance to the education of left-behind children in the rural areas. The project of "constructing boarding schools for left-behind children in rural areas" was launched in 2004. The project of "improving education level and constructing boarding schools for left-behind children in rural areas"in Sichuan province was launched by local government in 2008.As increasing number of people in the rural areas are migrating to work in the cities, it is found that for large part of students in the rural schools, their parents are away working in the cities. The shortage of funds has prevented rural schools from improving their conditions and problems persist. For example, the rural schools are often small and short of space for living so that students are living in the rent houses away from schools, in the old buildings which have been slightly altered or even in classrooms. The conditions bring grave problems to school operation, students’living and pose security risk. Therefore, building designers and environment designers are expected to follow the principle that "to design space is to design life" and plan the inner and outer space of rural schools in the way that is economical, convenient, well-organized and pleasing to the eyes, therefore, to satisfy the behavioral and psychological need of the left-behind children.The present research studies the space conditions of the boarding schools in rural areas of Nanchong and analyzes the problems. It is hoped that we could find a way to design the space that better suits the needs of left-behind children in boarding schools and improve the efficiency of school space designing, hence, providing reference for the planning and construction of those schools. The significance of the present study lies in:(1) It is concerned about the educational environment of left-behind children, a disadvantaged population;(2) It provides valuable references for the planning and construction of boarding schools for left-behind children in the rural areas in hope of creating an environment that could facilitate the psychological and physical development of the children in there
