A Study on the Role of Cultural Background Knowledge in College English Listening Teaching

In the context of the \With the increasingly frequent international exchanges , cross - cultural communication requirements inevitably highlights . With the cross- cultural communication , awareness and ability to become an inevitable requirement for effective cross - cultural communication . English as a world language , is widely used by the people of all countries . Therefore, in order to achieve the smooth progress of cross-cultural communication , English learners must have cross - cultural communicative competence . Listening, speaking , reading, writing and translation in five languages ??skills , basic English listening comprehension ability . Therefore , the strong English listening ability is a prerequisite in the West to achieve successful communication . The current status quo of college English classroom listening comprehension is a bottleneck restricting students' communicative competence . Listening classroom , only to master knowledge of grammar and vocabulary is far from satisfying the successful completion of communication . How to teach English in the classroom and cultural knowledge , to improve intercultural communicative competence of English learners to become teachers and the teaching college English listening researchers solved the problem . In response to this situation , the author of Dalian Ocean University the 189 freshmen professional and 24 English teachers survey and some of the interviews . The results showed that the students have realized the University Listening importance ; recognize the culture of the target language listening comprehension ; obstacles encountered in the willingness to learn and a culture of learning process for the English cultural background knowledge ; class to learn the culture of English-speaking countries best way . In the same time , teachers have a positive attitude toward cultural schema theory based teaching college English listening teaching but still there are many problems : poor overall level of students' listening ; teachers college English listening courses for the lack of knowledge of the target language culture ; set too loose , there are still many difficulties in the implementation of specific teaching . Based on empirical findings , the authors propose a cultural teaching college English listening teaching coping strategies implemented some possible methods and recommendations .
