With the rapid development of economy, China has accelerated the pace of communication with other nations. As for hosting a series of international events successfully, such as the 2008 Olympic Games, the 2010 World Expo, China’s international status has been improved quickly, more and more foreigners are coming to China. Therefore, the translation of public signs into English is becoming increasingly important. The quality of these translations is proved even more significant, and more studies focus on this problem. In this thesis, the author mainly studies the problems that exist in the C-E translation of public signs in Yiyang City, the author first gives a general overview of public signs. In Chapter 1, the author firstly introduces the public signs. Secondly the author analyzes the researches done on signs translation, and a table was given to explain the mistranslation of public signs in Yiyang City. Thirdly the author gives a general overview of the theoretical perspective of public signs translation.In Chapter 2, the author carries out an in-depth exploration into the problems existing in the C-E translation of public signs of Yiyang City. And by carefully and observe, the author classifies the mistranslation of public signs on linguistic level’s mistranslation, pragmatic level’s mistranslation and cultural level’s mistranslation, then the author makes an analysis of the causes of the problems in the C-E translation of public signs and points out that the linguistic mistranslation is usually caused by the carelessness of translators and producers; the pragmatic errors are usually caused by using in improper occasions or in unsuitable tone, the cultural problems are caused by the unawareness of cultural difference. Based on these analysis, in Chapter 3, the author brings up four principles and some methods to deal with these problems. Besides, the author also appeals to the government to pay more attention to purify the environment of public sign. What’s more, the author proposes that the internet channel and social channel should be fully utilized to promote the quality of public sign C-E translation of Yiyang City. The author hopes that by all kinds of means, Yiyang’s linguistic environment of public signs will be purified, and Yiyang city will become more charming than even before.
