Legal translation is not only a new branch of translation, but also an important supplement in the system of translation. The quality of the English translation of the abstracts of the doctoral jurisprudential theses is the first index to evaluate English level of doctoral jurisprudential theses and is a significant tool in international jurisprudential research as well. In theory, analyzing the problems of mistranslations in the abstracts of doctoral jurisprudential theses is significant for both jurisprudential research and translation research. In practice, the problems of mistranslation found in the theses can guide and urge the authors of theses to realize the importance of English translation of abstracts in jurisprudential theses and to adopt more rigorous and scientific attitude.Eleven English abstracts of doctoral jurisprudential theses are collected in the thesis. Mistranslations in the sample abstracts can be found in many aspects ,such as ,lexicon , syntax and text . The emphasis of analysis in the thesis is placed on lexicon and syntax. As far as lexicon is concerned, there exist a quantity of mistranslated terminology and common words; in the level of syntax, the mistranslations of tense ,voice and the structure of the sentences are found.Mistranslation is such a serious problem just because of the shortage of the author`s basic English knowledge and professional knowledge of legal English. Meanwhile , by analyzing the sample abstracts ,solutions to avoid mistranslation are presented. In terms of lexicon, the closest equivalents should be adopted and sometimes neologism is a good way to deal with the problem. In terms of syntax, the original sentences can be divided into several meaningful segments, which then are rearranged to satisfy the need of the target language. In a word, translation may have various ways to be guided ,but no translation guidance can be taken as a universal one at all.
