This article aims to discuss the colour in westen paintings. It consists of two parts: the first one analyses the knowledge of colour, form visual experience to scientific point of view, in the classic westen colour theories, expanding the thesis from the relation and semi-relation of colour in painting and thetheory study. The second part, however, deepens inside to explore how colour expresses its characters and gathers four different types in the westen paitings:1 .Instructional expression of colour.2.Cooriniative expression of colour.3.Natural expression of colour.4 Pure expression of colour Based on the four typical and expressional characters of colour in its historical period and the skills along side, I want to explain the differences and uniformity among the four types so as to understand the historical trace of development in the westen paintings, uncovering colours and expressing questions and crises when returning to itself.
