Reading aloud, which is also termed as recitation, is a good yardstick for English proficiency. It is the first and fundamental step in the attempt to master the target language. As a traditional learning and teaching strategy, it has been widely used by language learners and teachers for a long time. However, with further development of English teaching reform and the application of the multimedia, teachers tend to apply a variety of fashionable teaching method instead of traditional ones (such as reading aloud). Meanwhile, students pay no attention to English reading, because of the lack of proper instruction both in class and after it. Thus, few students can persist in reading aloud, and fewer students take reading English aloud as a method of English learning.The ability of reading comprehension of text is also a yardstick for English proficiency. It still works as one of the objectives of English teaching and learning. The correct rate of reading comprehension is also a way to measure the English proficiency of English learners.This dissertation introduces the development history and recent situation of reading aloud and reading comprehension. And it makes a deep explanation of the relationship between them. This dissertation attempts to explore the effectiveness of reading English aloud on the reading comprehension of the text through an empirical study, which consists of a pre-tests, a post-test, two questionnaires and a teaching practice. The author tends to provide some suggestions for teaching and learning of English by trying to put all of the theories into practice.In this empirical study, 120 subjects were selected from sophomore classes in a vocational college of foreign languages in Hebei Province. The time span of this study is 18 weeks. The data collected from the study were analyzed by the software SPSS. A contrastive analysis on the effectiveness of reading aloud on reading comprehension of text was carried on and clearly expounded. The approach for research was both qualitative and quantitative. Questionnaires, pre-test, post-test and analyses were applied in this research. The scatter diagram, which we got from analyses, shows that the score of reading comprehension is generally proportional to the time length of reading aloud. It can support a fact that reading English aloud is helpful to improve the ability of reading comprehension of the English learners. This research aims to get the empirical data through teaching practice to make clear that whether reading aloud can have positive effects on reading comprehension. It is to find the answers to the following research questions.Question1: How is reading aloud used as a teaching method in the English class? Question 2: How often do students utilize reading aloud as an exercise technique in their English study?Question 3: What effects can reading aloud have on students’reading comprehension of the text?This thesis consists of the following parts.Chapter One describes the research background, research purpose and research significance.Chapter Two introduces some related theories, basic concepts and previous studies on English reading aloud and reading comprehension of text both at home and abroad.Chapter Three illustrates the research methodology, which consists of the research subjects, research procedures and instruments for the study.Chapter Four introduces data analyses on questionnaires, pre-test and post-test. Meanwhile, the research questions are discussed.Chapter Five mainly presents research findings, implications and limitations of the study.
