Metaphor, which is not only a language phenomenon but also a cognitive means, is one of the most important means for human beings to understand themselves and the world. This thesis focuses on the application of Conceptual Metaphor Theory in English vocabulary teaching within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics. It studies the metaphorical meanings in English words under the guidance of Conceptual Metaphorical Theory and then points out the metaphorical mode in English teaching. First, the thesis makes a brief literature review on the history and development of vocabulary teaching and its related research findings of the study on the history of foreign language teaching. Second,the thesis studies the close relationship between Conceptual Metaphor Theory and vocabulary by analyzing the cognitive function of metaphor and the metaphorical meaning in words. Last, after the analysis of current English vocabulary teaching situation and the relationship between metaphor and vocabulary, the thesis concludes that it is important and significant to apply Conceptual Metaphor Theory for improving the effect of English vocabulary teaching.
