Design and Analysis of Dual Dry Clutch of a Car

Dual clutch transmission is a new-type of automatic transmission. Intergrated withthe advantages of automatic transmission and automatic mechanical transmission, it isable to achieve uninterrupted power during shift process, less shift time, high shift qualityand improved vehicle conformability, which has become a new research hotspot. As animportant part of dual clutch transmission, dual clutch is a new structure. However, due toits technical problems, further research on dual clutch is urgent and necessary.The dual clutch of a passenger vehicle is discussed in the paper. Firstly, differenttypes of double clutch are analyzed. Then considering the vehicle’s basic parameters, adual dry clutch is designed. Secondly, the finite models for driven plate, clutch cover anddiaphragm spring are built by finite element analysis software ABAQUS. The models areused to analyze the strength and stiffness and evaluate the rationality of the structure.Thirdly, based on the dynamics analysis of the passenger vehicle’s starting process, theautomotive transmission dynamical model is proposed to simulate its starting process andprovide exact boundary conditions for clutch thermo mechanical analysis. Finally, thecharacteristics of thermal load and thermo-stress coupling of pressure plate, driven plateand friction plate are analyzed to study changes of transient temperature field andthermo-stress coupling field, and the effect on clutch performance in the starting process isdiscussed. And then the reasonability of the dual clutch is evaluated. The exploration ofdesign and analysis on the dual dry clutch has significant reference value on the designand optimization of the product.
