A total of8inbred lines of welsh onion which greet genetic diversity was usedselectively as parents to make complete diallel crossing in order to study F1hybrids,backcrossing generations and parental materials. Quantitative analysis of6main characters ofwelsh onion was studied.The results indicated that most of the heterosis of free amino acid content, solubleprotein and Ethereal oil content were negative. Soluble solid content and soluble sugarcontent showed positive heterosis generally. While dry weight content showed a very widelyrange of heteiosis.The results from the variance analysis of combining ability showed that Variety6andVariety7have better GCA in all characters´╝îso they were very useful varieties for qualitybreeding. But it also showed SCA was not always accord with GCA.Six quality characters of sixteen welsh onion varieties were studied for comparison ofdifferent varieties and analysis of genetic correlation. The results showed soluble solidcontent was very significantly correlated with dry weight.. Soluble sugar was significantlycorrelated with dry weight.and the soluble solid content. the soluble protein content was notsignificantly correlated with other characters except free amino acid content.. Ethereal oil wasnot significantly correlated with other characters except soluble solid.The dominance action was more important than additive action for dry weight, Theheredity of dry weight was primary controlled by dominance action.The broad sense andnarroe sense heritability of dry weight are both high. It can be selected in early generations.The additive action was more important than dominance action for soluble solid and solublesugar. The dominance action was more important than additive action for free amino acidcontent and ethereal oil. It can be selected in early generations if broad sense and narroe senseheritability are both high such as soluble solid and soluble sugar. but if not, it is easy to beinfluence by environment, so it is better so select in later generations, such as free amino acidcontent and ethereal oil. The dominance action was more important than additive action forsoluble protein content. The broad sense of soluble protein content is high while narroe senseheritability is low. So the soluble protein content is easy to be influence by environment, it isbetter so select in later generations.
