Study of Ammoniation and Carbonation of Saturated NaCl Solution in High Gravity Environment

Rotating packed bed (RPB) is a process intensification apparatus for separation and reaction, where a simulated high gravity environment is created via centrifugal force formed by rotation, leading to a huge enhancement of mass transfer and micromixing.This thesis presents the study on the absorption of NH3 and CO2 into saturated NaCl solution in RPB. The effects of the rotation speed, gas volumetric flow rate, liquid volumetric flow rate, pH, temperature, NH3 and CO2 volume fraction on the absorption of NH3 and CO2 were investigated. Comparison of the absorption efficiency between stepwise absorption and simultaneous absorption of NH3 and CO2 was also discussed.Factors affecting the absorption of NH3 and CO2 into saturated NaCl solution in RPB were studied. Experimental results indicated that:In the process of the absorption of NH3 into saturated NaCl solution in RPB, the absorption efficiency of NH3 increased with the increase of liquid volumetric flow rate and the decrease of the gas volumetric flow rate, the volume fraction of NH3, pH and temperature. It was found that the absorption efficiency first increased and then decreased with the increase of the rotation speed, and reached maximum at 800rpm. In the process of the absorption of CO2 into ammoniated NaCl solution in RPB, the absorption efficiency of CO2 increased with the increase of the rotation speed, liquid volumetric flow rate, temperature and the decrease of the gas volumetric flow rate and the volume fraction of CO2. In the process of the simultaneous absorption of NH3 and CO2 into saturated NaCl solution in RPB, the influence of the rotation speed, gas volumetric flow rate, liquid volumetric flow rate, temperature on absorption efficiency was similar to that in stepwise absorption. In addition, the absorption efficiency of NH3 increased with the decrease of pH and NH3/CO2 molar ratio, the absorption efficiency of CO2 increased with the increase of NH3/CO2 molar ratio and the decrease of pH. Compared with stepwise absorption, the absorption efficiency of NH3 and CO2 were enhanced in the process of the simultaneous absorption.
