Study of Different Thickness Steel Plates Butt Weld Connection Performance

Welding is one of the most important ways to connect the steel structure. Welding steel structure is widely used in building, bridges, ocean projects, mechanics, and so on. It has such advantages as high strength, light weight, and so on. Butt weld is a kind of welding. Due to the discontinued shapes caused by the change in the outward structural size, when the different thickness of steel plates is done by the butt weld,the effect of the load can easily lead to the phenomenal of stress concentration.Concerning the butt weld in different thickness of steel, codes for design of steel structures of several countries are different. This paper analyzes the docking weld steel structure different in thickness according to the codes for design of steel GB50017-2003 and the Germany codes for design of steel DIN 18800-1:2008. Through comparison in the different butt weld connection of the steel in different thickness, the difference mainly exist in the sectional transition angle and the joint with differend welding feet. By the method of the Finite-element simulation, the paper analyzes the difference in the codes for design of steel and analyze the effect of bevel gradient in different thickness steel and the joint with differend welding feet on stress concentration.
