Lord of the Flies is the first and most famous novel of William Golding, and ithas a glorious position in the history of modern British novel. This is a fable with anidea of a nuclear war in future. The two World Wars, especially the Second WorldWar have brought great sufferings to people, which urged people to think abouthumanity. And later, it became the source of the Golding’s creation. Lord of the Fliesis the first novel that shows the writer’s thought of postmodernism, in which Goldingexpresses his subverted idea towards the traditional structures of those novels anddeconstructs the leading position of the meta-narrative. His thoughts are similar tothose of the postmodernists. Therefore, this novel has typical postmodernity. Thecharacters in Lord of the Flies have diversified, contradictory and mystery traits, which fully show their uncertainty in nature. In Lord of the Flies, the children’scharacters are varied, which lead to an uncertain trait. It is similar to the fragmentalcharacters advocated by the postmodernists. This chapterspecifically discusses the writer’s use of various writing style, parody and non-linearnarrative, in this way, the thesis offers some evidence to deeply prove the novel as apostmodernism novel. The third chapter makes a classification about the patterns of the narrativefocalization and meanwhile, explores the diversification of the narrative perspectivesin Lord of the Flies as a postmodern work. The thesis analyzes Lord of the Flies frominternal mental focalization, external focalization and their conversions. In this way,the thesis gives some foundation to confirm that Lord of the Flies is a postmodernwork.Combined with the traits of the postmodernism, the author of this thesis tries tostate the narrative strategies from postmodernism so as to support that Lord of theFlies is a masterpiece with postmodern features.
