Progressive Exercises in the Chinese Written Language is a Chinese textbook written byT.L.Bullock, who was a professor of Chinese in the University of Oxford. This essay organizes andanalyzes the contents of this book in aspects of characters, Vocabulary and grammar, and tried togive a comment on the aims of teaching, the content arrangement and teaching methods.The first chapter is an introduction, introduce the significance of topics, the presentresearch, using theories, methods and the corpus source and so on, to point out that themeaning and purpose of the study. Chapter two: describe the life of T.L.Bullock and his majorworks, and analysis the background, content, and structure of the Progressive Exercises in theChinese Written Language. Then we compare it with Documentary Course by Thomas FrancisWade, Notes on the Chinese Documentary Styles by Friedrich Hirth, pointing out thecharacteristics and contributions of the three books. Chapter three focuses on studyingcharacters and vocabulary in the book. We analyses its characters and teaching with a view to theamount of vocabularies and words chosen in this book. On the basis of it, the characteristics areanalyzed and estimated. Chapter four concentrates on analyzing part of speech. First, analyzingnouns, verbs, adjectives in the special use of ancient Chinese. Then give a detailed analysis of"zhi" and "qi". Chapter five is about special sentence patterns in written Chinese. In this chapter,pan duan ju, bei zi ju, bi jiao ju are analyzed from structure, semantic relations and syntacticfunctions. So as to summarize the characteristics of three kinds of sentences, then give anevaluation of its teaching effectiveness. The last part is an overall estimation of the book base onthese researches, to evaluate contribution and shortcomings in Chinese written languageteaching.
