Study of the Promoting Function of Second Classorom Activities to the Improvement of Students’ Integrated Ability of English

With the economic globalization and more frequent international exchangeand cooperation, English is being paid more and more attention to. English learnersrange from children to70-year-old elders, and the population who study English fora better career is increasing in China. As the main force of the new age, teenagersand youngsters should have a good command of this language.In China, the main channel of English learning is school education. With thereform and development of modern education, students begin to learn English whenthey are in kindergarten. After more than10years’ study, students’ English ability incollege is still bad. They have mastered a large amount of knowledge such asvocabulary and grammar, but they cannot use English to communicate.Reasons that cause this phenomenon have been researched for a long-time.Some researches attribute it to the past test-oriented education in which studentslearn English to achieve high score and the application of language is ignored. Afterthe implementation of quality-oriented education in a large popularity, improvementis not achieved to a large extent. Apart from the continuous improvement of CollegeEnglish Curriculum Requirements, the research on how to improve college students’integrated ability of English is still on its way.As the supplement and extension of classroom teaching, second classroomactivities (short for SCA) have gained more and more attention. Researchers try tofind solutions to improve students’ integrated ability of English through the way ofSCA.In1995, the Foreign Affairs College hosted the first Model United NationsConference (short for MUNC) of China’s colleges and universities in Peking. TheMUNC played a crucial part in promoting students’ English learning. Since2003,Sichuan International Studies University (short for SISU) has participated in nationaland international MUNC and hosted the first SISUMUNC in2005. The activities of the MUNC make great contribution to the improvement of students’ Englishlanguage ability.For this purpose,2011SISUMUNC is taken as the case, through the methods ofobservation, interview and questionnaire and with the concept and principles ofWhole Language Approach (short for WLA), this thesis is focused on the MUNC inorder to find the suitable model for English SCA (short for ESCA) and develop abetter way to develop students’ English language abilityUltimately, this thesis finds out that the MUNC can promote the improvementof students’ integrated ability of English and develop some other comprehensiveabilities which can adapt to the society. The MUNC is a SCA and it can become anexemplification of second classroom activities. Besides, it is a reference to thestudies on exploring and creating other meaningful and useful SCA.
