Cesar Frank(1822-1890) is a famous composer in France. And she is also anexcellent organ player and musical educationalist. As an outstanding representative forFrench national music in later Romantism, Frank not only carried on classical form, butalso opened up characteristic Frank romantic style. At the same time, he holds a specialplace in the development of romantic polyphony. The devout pursuit for religion urgedhim to create a large amount of polyphony works, including vocal music andinstrumental music. We can devide his creation in the whole life into two parts from1870s and most of his excellent works were almost created in the last15years in his life.Among these works, those about instrumental music are better, which basically sum upall of the skills of writing polyphony. To some degree, the attachment to German polyphony reflects his inheritance anddevelopment for the classical composition. By means of studying Frank’s polyphonytechnique, we can analyze, conclude and summerize the typical polyphony technique inhis works, especially the inheritance and development for the classical polyphonytechnique, and then form his unique polyphony style and influence the Romantism inthe later period. There are two parts to discuss the topic in the paper. The first one is theintroduction which mainly states the objective, content, methods and means about thisthesis and the research statue domestic and overseas. The second part is the detailsabout the paper which is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is dicussing thebrief introduction about his lifetime and his works. The second chapter, which is the keypoint of the whole thesis, is about the application for the skills of polyphony in theworks of instrumental music, which explains the skills of polyphony from the featuresof the thesis and harmony as well as the usage of Fugato. The third chapter mainlynarrates the influence and meanings for the later Romantism of the polyphony skills inFrank’s instrumental works. In the period Frank lived, homophony and polyphony has been developed and at that time, the music tended to be the creation about opera. There was no freshness atthat time. But Frank’s persistence injected fresh blood into the instrumental works andhis spirit of creation remains alive today. This paper tries to analyze and study hisinstrumental works and then further understand Frank’s composition skills and creativethnking, which is quite meaningful for the later polyphony writing and research.
