As a regime established by the northern nomadic ethnic, Liao Dynasty has vastterritory and complicated nature and geography environment. The two factors thatnational content and area layout have become the important starting point for thedevelopment of the Liao Dynasty’s military. The successive rulers set well-definedborder management mechanism and take many effective measures to defend theborder area, such as setting the official department, hoarding large number of troops,setting the border castle and classifying households.At the same time,they establish amature system for protecting the borders,and maintain border security and socialstability of the Liao’s regime. To discuss the system of protecting the frontiers willdeepen the research of the Liao Dynasty’s frontier defence.According to the general classification from the central and local simply in thispaper about the border areas and institutional settings of Liao Dynasty’s frontierofficial post. QiDan(契丹) national officials, according to the north-south divide,thenorth officer in charge of government administration of tribe and territories thatbelongs to Liao Dynasty,including important matters,the south border agencyresponsible for military affairs in places that inhabited by the Han nationality underthe control of Liao Dynasty. The local frontiers jurisdictions can be divided into northand south, because of the vast territory, numerous tribes, mechanism appearsunavoidably overlap. The setting of these institutions to ensure that the Liao Dynastyfrontiers system is able to complete smoothly, it plays a key role in garrisoning thefrontiers of Liao Dynasty.The specific frontiers execution. Liao Dynasty traditional military frontiers,internal repression direct threat to the court ruled the people to revolt, to stabilize theruling order; externally prepared Imperial neighbors invade. Addition to several measures, the LiaoDynasty with sub-rule Foreigners by Foreigners and other means to disintegrate thehostile forces to consolidate the Liao Dynasty border.Liao Dynasty frontiers system flexibility, the number of times members of themulti-source, two-track system, institutional Minister royal system characteristicssignificantly affected by the impact of their own national traditions and the advancedgarrison experience of the central Plains, contains two features, the imperialcivilization characteristics of the central plains and nomadic characteristics.From the unified multi-ethnic state and the development of the entire historyrelationship, the formulation and implementation of the Liao Dynasty’s frontierssystem, not only to narrow the difference between the various ethnic groups in theterritory of Liao Dynasty, but also build closer relations between the various regionsand ethnic groups. Further, it expands and strengthens the relations between the entirecountry and political power, intensifies the function of the ethnic minority for thecohesiveness of Liao Dynasty’s hinterland, provides a reference for three successivedynasties that Jin(金)、Yuan(元)、Qing (清), so as to make outstandingcontributions to the multiplicate integration process of the Chinese nation.
