The Ancient Preface to the Poetry (APP) collected in the Shanghai Museum is also called Kongzi shilun (Comments on the Poetry by Confucius) or Shilun (Comments on the Poetry), etc. Scholars have been made much research on it which is aiming at the reconstruction of the Chu bamboo slip text. How is it going? This thesis uses the methodology of the study of Chinese intellectual history and textual criticism to examine the related problems, such as literary style, the title, the rearrangement of bamboo slips, and the insertion of missing characters, and then gives my own judgement and view.As for the title of the Chu bamboo slip version of the APP, this thesis examines each representative theories proposed by different scholars. Considering the characteristics of the literary style of the Chu bamboo slip version of the APP, this thesis argues that the literary style of the APP is that of "Great Commentary" based on the examination of the sequences of poetic comments in the Poetry, the ways of interpretation, and the style of quoting the words of Confucius, etc. Essays written in such literary style were titled "Preface to the Poetry" in the tradition of ancient Chinese poetics. According to this understanding, this thesis argues that the Warring States Chu bamboo slip text collected in the Shanghai Museum should be titled "Ancient Preface to the Poetry," as suggested by Professor Jiang Guanghui. The Chu bamboo slip version of the APP is seriously damaged due to broken slips. There have been a number of variant reconstructions proposed. This thesis carefully and systematically examines the broken bamboo slips and the transcription as well as several typical reconstructions, discusses the rationality and regularity of how to reconstruct the APP and insert its missing characters correctly.
