There is tremendous interest in music education for university students today. Music not only enhances knowledge of intellectual aspect, but also influences students significantly on the education of fine art and morality. Education without music will eventually leads to defects of individual person and society in many ways. By enriching music experience for non-music major students, music education in university aims to improve students’appreciation on fine art, enhance both their moral and intellectual level, and help their all-around improvement. In order to better fulfill these purposes, it is essential to study and analyze the problems of the music appreciation course today.Concerning the music appreciation course in university, there have been a lot of studies and researches, most of which focus on specific methods of music teaching or analyses of music education in a certain district of the country. This paper discusses a rarely-mentioned topic of music education in independent institutes. The independent institute is a new form of academic institutions. Although it adopts similar administrative and instructional systems of the university headquarters including the music education, differences commonly exist in the general principles, the education philosophy and the operation mode. Aiming for practical techniques and knowledge, the independent institutes emphasize the importance of regular curriculums and tend to ignore the musical aspect of education. As a result, music education in independent institutes is of greater urgency and realistic meaningBased on the experience of contemporary university music education in China, this thesis summarizes an extensive review of statistics and researches on one of the typical independent institutes, Southwest University Yucai College. The article reviews the facts and existing problems by investigating and analyzing the target population, the objectives, the contents and the methods of the music appreciation elective course in Yucai College today. Considering the distinguishing features of independent institutes, possible solutions will be discussed in order to improve the methodologies for the music course in these institutes.
