Task-based teaching of vocabulary in practice Vocabulary constitutes one of the basic components of any language and hence vocabulary teaching is one of the essential tasks of teachers of English in their classroom teaching. It’s a common experience of the teachers that though language learners know very well the importance of vocabulary learning, yet they often show strong resistance to memorizing or reciting individual words in isolation from contexts. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary for teachers to find some effective ways in classroom teaching to arouse the learners’interest in vocabulary learning. In recent years, many teachers of English in China have been applying the task-based approach in their vocabulary teaching and have achieved fairly some satisfactory results. Perhaps, that’s one of the reasons that the new English curriculum puts great emphasis on Task-based Approach so as to enable students, under the guidance of teachers, to achieve their learning goals and experience success by means of practice, participation, cooperation and so on. In my class, I find some unmotivated students who are not interested in vocabulary learning and therefore unable to develop their linguistic and communicative competence in the language they are learning. Then, how can we motivate these students in vocabulary learning? Is the Task-based Teaching Approach an effective one? In what way and to what extent is it an effective approach? With those questions in mind, I chose this topic for my research. In my study, I first present the practical appliance of the teaching method. Then, I made a case study by investigating the vocabulary learning and teaching of some students and several teachers in Hongxing high school in Maanshan. Anhui Province. The results of my investigation show well the effectiveness and the feasibility of the task-based approach. Finally, taking into consideration of the current situation of English teaching in China, I put forward some more or less specific suggestions as to how to teach vocabulary in classroom English teaching on the basis of an analysis of the three aspects of teaching:problems existing in the teaching process:the setting of the teaching tasks and the teaching procedures. The study concludes that the Task-based Teaching Approach of vocabulary is very effective for learners, and, in addition, it may also provide useful information to educational policymakers and school administrators for reference. Most importantly, it provides a way and a chance for the English teachers in the current situation in China to try to put classroom English teaching on the track of student-centered and communication-oriented teaching.
