Reasons for the difficulties and countermeasures from the perspective of learning strategies to explore the vocational college students learning English

For the past decades, higher vocational education has become more and more important in the education system of China. Meanwhile, with the development of China’s economy and the reform and opening to the outside world, English has been considered to be a necessary tool in one’s career development and English proficiency has been taken as one of the most important professional competence. Therefore, there has been remarkably significance in the English education of higher vocational colleges of China. However, the present situation of English teaching and learning in higher vocational colleges is far from satisfaction. It is necessary for English teachers of higher vocational colleges to adopt active teaching methods and help the students improve their English proficiency by learning about the students’learning beliefs and learning strategies.This thesis reports a qualitative study on the students with difficulties in English learning of higher vocational college from the view of English learning strategy, which is aimed to investigate the relationship between the leaning strategies and learning difficulties of higher vocational students. The researcher tries to find the strategic elements which result in the English learning difficulties of the three participants by way of interview with them as well as diary study and video observation.The researcher first describes the learning strategies used by the participants separately and then analyzes how these strategies lead to their English learning difficulties. After that, the researcher tries to propose some countermeasures to these strategic problems.The researcher also proposes several suggestions for English educators. Firstly, the teaching of English learning strategy should start from high school education. Secondly, the designing of textbooks should be improved by absorbing learning strategies as the major content. Thirdly, the present evaluation system should be changed by attaching equal importance to evaluating both students’mastery of language knowledge and students’learning methods. Fourthly, the higher vocational English teachers should be trained to strengthen the consciousness of strategy teaching and improve their abilities of strategy training. Fifthly, the students should get help to use the right metacognitive strategies effectively. Sixthly, the influence of emotions deserves attention and the students’consciousness of emotional strategies should be strengthened and the students’abilities of using emotional strategies should be improved.
