Case studies of elementary Chinese class vocabulary and grammar teaching

Classroom teaching is the centre of four major links in teaching Chinese as a second language. Also, vocabulary and grammar teaching are main part in primary phase of teaching Chinese as a second language. This article is based on the teaching videos and teaching sound recordings of ten teachers who are teaching Chinese intensive reading in primary phase. Through these materials by detailed description and analysis on teaching approaches and teaching process of vocabulary and grammar, based on their theories and principles, we will sum up the similarities and differences between these teachers in vocabulary and grammar teaching. And we hope it could help to improve the classroom teaching of teaching Chinese as a second language.We conclude that:(1)The vocabulary is mostly displayed by multimedia directly; reading is requisite; the display of vocabulary is connected to the explanation. (2)The explanation is focus on questions and answers, and using pictures; the teaching methods of notional is more than function words, and the teaching methods of function words is focus on Q&A, context, example sentences and explained by Chinese. (3) Identification exercise and usage exercise are mainly used in vocabulary exercises; the function words exercises are focus on context of usage exercise and notional can be used in all kinds of exercises. (4)Based on the analysis and theories, we sum up the similarities and differences in vocabulary teaching and what we should be noted. (5)The grammar is mostly displayed by context and text; the structure of complete sentence is used by context and the simple one is used by text. (6)The explanation is focus on formula symbols with Chinese explanation which is related to the nature of grammar; the methods of explanation of complete sentence structure are more than simply ones. (7)Flexibility communication practice is mainly used in grammar exercises. (8) Based on the analysis and theories, we sum up the similarities and differences in grammar teaching and put forward some teaching suggestions.
