Research on Kindergarten Principals’Training Needs Based on Competence Mode:Taking Shanghai as an Example

The robust development and drastic change of our preschool education bring great challenge for our preschool leader and administrators. According to human capital theory, on-job-training is a very important way to improve and increase the value of human capital. This paper makes research on the training issues over the principals of kindergarten standing on the point of position competency. This paper, based on the theory of competence and human capital development, makes kindergarten principals as research subjects who are randomly drawn from Shanghai, and adopt the methods of behavior events interview and questionnaire survey to proceed research, in order to analysis the key competences of kindergarten principals and their training needs over the view of better competent for the position. The main conclusions are drawn as follow:The threshold competence of kindergarten principals concludes thirteen competences, they are team leadership, interpersonal communication and relationship setting skill, resources management, problem analysis and solving, plan making and monitoring, self-reflecting and regulating, professional education teaching and researching skills, over all vision, influences, reform and renovation, responsibility flexibility and initiative.For the training expectation of kindergarten principals, the professional education and teaching knowledge, management skills, education research and business management skills are in more need. The training ways needed are cases discussing, professions mentoring, visiting and communicating and mutual helping. Besides the way of e-learning and school-based research are not so popular. From the cross analysis of working life on the position of kindergarten principals and training expectation, the management skills, professional education and teaching knowledge and education research skill are more popular for kindergarten principals that have been on this position from one year to five years.This paper has its important meaning towards theories and practices. For the theoretical perspective, the construction of competence mode of kindergarten principals, it can richen education human resources development theory. For the practical perspective, kindergarten principals can make contrast with the mode and find where should be improve, thus to design and choose the appropriate training programs and individual development plans. For the preschool education administration department, they can use this mode to select and evaluate the competent person for the position of kindergarten principals’position and make full uses of the mode to propel the construction of kindergarten principal professional development. For the training service providers, they can design and develop the training programs which can well meet the needs of kindergarten principals and improve the training effectiveness for the kindergarten principals.
