Research on the IPDR Based Network Management System

Nowadays, SNMP protocol is still used by most of the network management systems. However, along with the development of networking technology, network itself becomes more and more complicated, device number increased rapidly, and information inside a single devices as well. In this situation, some disadvantageous of SNMP protocol come out as follows. Firstly, SNMP protocol is based on request/response model to handle information. This request/response data transferring model will use lots of network bandwidth in the case of handling huge amount of data, and consequently lead to management data be delayed on the route, in the worst case, it even be dropped. Secondly, due to it has a nature property which is UDP based, SNMP data packet has the opportunity to be lost, thus reliability of network management system would be decreased. To avoid those shortages, many network device supplier and operator companies expect to look for a better substitution.The proposal of IP Detailed Record (IPDR) protocol is expected to solve those issues. IPDR is reliable, fast, efficient and flexible. It’s initially raised to handle accounting information of network management systems, but actually it’s not only for accounting management, but also for other aspect of network management functionality, such as performance management, security management, etc.This paper will study the basic frame and usage area of IPDR based network management system, main tasks as follows:1. Introduce the IPDR protocol and how to use it in the network management systems, introduce the expandability of the structure.2. Study and implement an IPDR exporter system prototype which implements the basic functionality of exporter, including template definition, data collection, collector list maintenance, session list maintenance, etc. It can transfer IPDR data to IPDR collector;3. By using the prototype system, collector experimental data, including total data amount, transfer speed and efficiency, compare it with SNMP protocol under the same hardware/software condition, come out the conclusion that, comparing with SNMP, IPDR based network management systems do have advantages in those aspects.4. Study and implement the hot-standby network management system based on IPDR to improve the reliability, which can quickly switch over to standby collector when something wrong with the active one.
