Chinese urbanization has developed quickly since the reform and opening on the background of economic globalization. Along with the early experience and lessons of urbanization in the coastal area, the central and western regions also entered a period of rapid urbanization. It is in the context of this realistic development that scholars of both at home and aboard launched comprehensive studies of Chinese urbanization and obtained good results. But it can be seen that the focus of the studies is confined to the developed coastal area, and the research contents include the dynamic mechanism and evolution law of urbanization. Studies on the central less-developed region is less, especially researches on the urbanization path of the Dabie mountain area in Hubei province. Based on GIS analysis method and principal component analysis, the article selected the Dabie mountain area in Hubei province as the research object, explored the problems existed in the urbanization of the Dabie mountain area and sought suitable urbanization paths for the Dabie mountain area in Hubei province. The research contents of this thesis are as follows:(1) Establishing the basic geographical information database and the ten-year economic development database of the Dabie mountain area in Hubei province by field research and the collection of basic data;(2)Combined with map analysis method, making comprehensive analysis of the population urbanization, land urbanization and industry urbanization of the Dabie mountain area using qualitative and quantitative analysis methods;(3)Creating the urbanization level evaluation system which is based on twelve indexes of three categories, including population, space, industry, urban construction and social life, and obtaining the comprehensive urbanization level of the Dabie mountain area through principal component analysis tool of SPSS;(4)Making integrated analysis of the above results and straightening up the problems existed in the urban development of the Dabie mountain area using the Moran’s I clustering analysis tool of ArcGIS;(5)Establishing urbanization paths system presented by types of "strong center","industrial interaction" and "fair-space", and proposing the corresponding safeguard measures of both system and policy. The urbanization level of the Dabie mountain area keeps rising as a whole. The population of this region outflows on a large scale, appearing a clear trend of out-going urbanization, and the urban population is increasing. The urban built-up area is expanding, keeping a low diffusion condition, and industrial land takes a large proportion of the land for urban construction. The industry is at a stage of primary level and the industrial structure is of the traditional "231" mode. The main problems existed in the urbanization of the Dabie mountain area are as follows:It appears an unreasonable industrial structure and the level of the secondary industry is low; the development of the tertiary industry lags behind, and the quality is not high, thus playing a limited leading role of other cities; characteristic resources are underdeveloped and resource superiority hasn’t transformed into industrial advantages; the lack of local job opportunities leads to serious outflow of the population; the dynamics of urbanization is insufficient and the economy lags behind; there is large spatial difference in internal development opportunities. In order to solve the above problems, the article proposed several types of urbanization paths to build the entire path of urbanization of the Dabie mountain area in Hubei province, including types of "strong center","industrial interaction" and "fair-space". Lastly, the article put forward four institutional guarantee systems, including housing security system, residence permit system, administration authority division of urban construction system and finance transfer payment system.
