Western literature is generally considered the romanticism as the first English Romantic literary school with eco-consciousness. One of the major English Romantic poets as Samuel Taylor Coleridge is generally acknowledged as highly talented poet. His poems, though small, but many are popular works. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is Coleridge’s the only one complete poem left to posterity.In this paper, it takes the eco-ethics and holism as the theoretical basis to analyze The Rime of the Ancient Mariner to further explore the relationship between man and nature.Through the analysis, we can draw such a conclusion, the relationship between man and nature in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is similar to the relationship in historical evolution.The relations between man and nature in the process of human history have gone through three stages: the original harmony, opposition to the separation to the re-settlement reflection.The thesis is divided into three chapters, as mentioned before:“The harmony between man and nature”,“the conflict between man and nature”,“the compromise between man and nature”.Chapter One will analyze: The harmony between man and nature. It contains harmony between individual sailors and harmony between sailors and the albatross.Chapter Two will analyze: The conflict between man and nature. It contains conflicts between albatross and one sailor and conflicts between sailors and nature.Chapter Three will analyze: The compromise between man and nature. It contains compromise between the one sailor and snake and Compromise between sailors and natureThe conclusion reaches that it is eco-equality. Only remember this history, learn from it and better promote the harmony between man and nature.
