Research on Performance of Shielding Structure Stuffed with Woven of Basalt Fabric

With the development of space activities, the space environment is everdeteriorating, and the space debris population is increasing sharply. We have to considerthe problem how to protect spacecrafts from the impact of the space debris. Whipplebumper shield is a basic space debris shielding structure. Stuffed Whipple shielding’sperformance is even better. And the high strength fiber materials such as Nextel andKevlar have been used as the stuffed materials. Whether or not the stuffed Whippleshielding stuffed with domestic fiber materials such as Basalt fiber has the same goodperformance or even better than the shielding stuffed with Nextel and Kevlar fiber is akey problem.At first, the hypervelocity impact tests to the Whipple shielding stuffed with Basaltand Kevlar were conducted with the non-powder two-stage light gas gun facilities inorder to study the shielding’s performance stuffed with domestic Basalt fiber.Then, the paper compared the experimental results with the ballistic limits curves ofthe shielding stuffed with Nextel and Kevlar fiber having the corresponding parameters.And we know that Whipple shielding stuffed with Basalt and Kevlar fiber has betterperformance than that stuffed with Nextel and Kevlar fiber.Thirdly,according to the experimental results, the paper discussed the differences ofall the shielding structure stuffed with Basalt and Kevlar fiber.At last, we have the conclusion that Whipple shielding stuffed with high strengthfiber materials has better performance than Whipple shielding.
