Experimental Study on Performance of Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Mixture

Most high-way pavements in our country are asphalt ones. All types of disease are quite common in asphalt pavements when exposed to natural factors and traffic loads. Now, Fiber asphalt mixture is attracting more and more attention because of its ability to improve the asphalt pavement performance. Basalt fiber is a new type one, which can avoid the disadvantages of traditional fibers as well as improve the asphalt mixture performance, which guarantee its widely use in the future.This paper made the mixture design with AC-13C(continuous grading) and SMA-13(gap grading).First, the best asphalt aggregate ratio of different mixtures is made by Marshall Test; Then, mixtures were made and the pavement performances of that were studied. At last, this paper analyzed the comprehensive benefit of basalt fiber mixture.The Marshall Test results showed that basalt fiber lead to a higher asphalt aggregate ratio、higher stability、larger void ratio and lower density in AC-13C,while a lower asphalt aggregate ratio、less loss in scattering and more loss in leaking in SMA-13, and basalt fiber had little influence on stability and density in SMA-13.The pavement performances of two type mixtures were studied in this paper. These performances included high temperature stability、low temperature crack resistance、water stability and anti-fatigue performance. The test results indicated that basalt fiber can improve the low temperature crack resistance and anti-fatigue performance effectively. The fatigue life of basalt fiber mixture was as2times as that of ordinary mixture in AC-13C while4times in SMA-13. The dynamic stability at60℃and70℃of different asphalt mixtures showed that basalt fiber mixture had a better anti-deformation ability at higher temperature. A deep study should be attached to the water stability of basalt fiber mixture because there was different trendy in different mixtures.This paper analyzed the economical benefit、environment benefit and social benefit of basalt fiber asphalt mixture. The results showed that basalt fiber asphalt mixture had a long-term economical benefit in spite of higher initial investment. Basalt rubber is one inorganic miner fiber whose produce process and work process had no bad influence on the environment, which had a perfect environment benefit. Basalt fiber mixture could improve the quality of life, which had a excellent social benefit.The conclusions of this paper provided reference to widely use of basalt fiber mixture, which had certain research significance and practical value.
