An Exploration of the Development of Chinese English Majors’ Mental Lexicon Organization

Second language mental lexicon organizational model is an important dimension of the measure of Lexical Competence. With the development of the discipline of cognitive linguistics and psycholinguistics, mental lexicon research has gradually developed in recent years to become an independent and popular field of study. However, most of the research has focused on Native Mental Lexicon, especially English learners, second language mental lexicon Study of Mental Lexicon relatively much less. The current study aims to investigate the nature of a certain type of mental lexicon of Chinese English learners with similar language levels. In this study, by the characteristics of the dynamic development of the use of the word association test to explore a different language level English majors in the mental lexicon organization mode. In order to achieve the aim to investigate, the researchers of the 30 Sichuan International Studies University English major sophomore, fourth grade 30 English undergraduate students and 30 graduate students of the English language and literature sophomore a word association test. This study examined the vertical combinations of subjects mental lexicon organization links, syntagmatic links, links encyclopedic knowledge of voice links proportion situation, and each ratio in the three groups of subjects in the comparison. Volume 80 valid test data analysis results show that: 1) University sophomore Group: Voice links (53.1%) gt; syntagmatic links (15.6%) gt; the the vertical combination Connection (11.2%) gt; encyclopedic knowledge coupling (4.3 %); 2) college senior group: Voice links (45.2%) gt; syntagmatic links (23.9%) gt; vertical combinations of coupling (17.0%) gt; encyclopedic knowledge links (9.1%); 3) Graduate Group: voice links (59.8%) gt; syntagmatic links gt (15.7%); vertical combinations of coupling (15.1%) gt; the encyclopedic knowledge links (4.3%). Therefore, in this study the following conclusions: three groups of different levels of English majors mental lexicon organizational model is basically the same, and that voice links gt; syntagmatic links gt; vertical combination links gt; encyclopedic knowledge links. The voice links always dominant in the the psychological vocabulary tissues of the three groups of subjects, this conclusion is further verify the conclusions of previous studies, that second language learners psychological vocabulary based on voice-based organizations. The results of this study also showed that: semantic links (syntagmatic links, vertical combination of links and encyclopedic knowledge coupling) the proportion reached its peak in the college senior stage, college senior was the the semantic links proportion in the organization of the mental lexicon of 50.0%. But graduate study a large extent, the decline the the graduate test the mental lexicon organization the semantic links proportion of 35.1%. This indicates that the organization of the mental lexicon of Chinese English Majors was changing pattern of volatility. Finally, based on the research findings, this paper is to optimize the organization of the mental lexicon second language learners, second language learners vocabulary some teaching suggestions, and also pointed out the limitations of this study, as well as the outlook for future research.
