This thesis attempts to design a harvester with the functions of ground-breaking, digging, transporting, separating, collecting, etc. but easy operation and maintenance, based on the artichoke’s cultivating and growing characteristics in Helan and the traditional way of harvesting it, which has low efficiency, high cost and seriously restricts the process of the mechanization of production. The harvester employs a variety of organs to achieve the required work with1.5mu per hour, about3000kilograms artichoke.This thesis first studies and analyzes those harvesting machines, which have similar physical properties, and compares their structure and working characteristics as well, based on which, a design plan for the side suspension artichoke combine harvester is worked out. Besides, the whole structure, the mechanical drive system and every working organ of the machine are also designed. In the past two years, the plan has been improved largely for three times after making several site inspections, simulated tests, analyses as well as demonstrations. The improvement is mainly upon the working organ which is responsible for separating earth and artichoke. Finally, a model of the harvester is built, analyzed and designed, with the sample machine made and tested as well as the real harvester finished.The main contents of the research:(1)Study the difficulties and focal points of the current artichoke harvesting, propose a design plan for the side suspension artichoke combine harvester based on a comprehensive analysis;(2)Design the whole structure; the mechanical drive system and every working organ based on the worked-out solutions, analyze and calculate them;(3)Make a site test; learn the earth characteristics and the physical principles of artichoke; build a base for the working organs of the machine;(4)Design the model with BM3D; modify the model according to the parameters gained from the real test and the expected target; draw a two-dimensional design draft; make the sample machine and test it according to the principles;(5)Improve the working organs of the machine in the light of proof test; make the real machine based on the modified two-dimensional design draft;(6)Test the harvester in the fields; exam its performance; collect the harvesting data of artichoke (harvesting efficiency, the proportion of the loss, the proportion of evading, burying as well damaging artichoke);
