Study on the Hydraulic Liftability and the Drought Tolerance of Potato

In semi-arid area, it become a hot issue that how to make full use of deep mois-ture in arable land to promote shallow root growth, absorb the moisture. Water-savingirrigation and water saving is a hot topic in the dry land farming research in recentyears. Hydraulic lift is refers to the plant under the condition of low transpiration,deep roots absorb the deep soil moisture, and then through the shallow root systemreleased into the drying layer in the soil, the water plays an important role in keepingthe normal shallow root system growth. In the experiment, the underground irrigationmethods have influence on hydraulic lift. Hydraulic lifted water and the root parame-ters, biomass, and the process of water affect plant physiological and biochemical in-dex. This study has the following main conclusions:1. In the2011experiment, there was a preliminary study on the hydraulic lift, hy-draulic lift capacity and related morphological indices were measured in three times,experimental result proves that potato has hydraulic lift and there was a certain rela-tionship between drought resistance of potato and hydraulic lift ability. Experimentfurther confirmed that water potential gradient between up and down soil is basiccondition for hydraulic lift occurred, and hydraulic lift phenomenon may exists in lowtranspiration for different potato varieties in up dry soil and down wet soil conditions,and in soil upper and lower are dry, and upper and lower are wet water conditions al-most no hydraulic lift phenomenon.2. In the experiment,8potato varieties of different drought resistance were mainlyselected to prove that hydraulic lift ability of potato varieties, drought resistanceamong8potato varieties. Hydraulic lift was associated with the potato drought resis-tance; there was higher water content in the up pots under WD water treatment condi-tions than drought water treatment.3. Physiological indexes such as plant height, root system, and biomass showedthe same regularity. On the whole, to drought sensitive varieties, half-dry and drytreatment showed a larger difference more than water treatment.According to the rootparameters, Longshu#3, Dingshu#1, Qingshu#9with strong drought resistance,Longshu#6, and Xindaping has moderate drought resistance, and Qingshu#2, Favorita, the Atlantic in the root indicators showed weak drought resistance. According to thedetermination of physiological and biochemical indexes of different potato varieties,hydraulic lift response to the influence of different potato varieties, under semi-aridtreatment, various varieties produce different reaction, strong drought resistance va-rieties adapt to the environment response through adjustment ability theirselves. Un-der the drought condition, there was no phenomenon of the hydraulic lift in the varie-ties, but the drought stress has impact on physiological and biochemical indexes, to acertain extent, reflect the varieties of drought resistance ability.4. Under semi-arid conditions, weak drought resistance varieties showed a largerdifference in physiological and biochemical aspects, for example, SOD, CAT enzymeactivity, the accumulation of MDA, proline content, root activity, chlorophyll, photo-synthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, strong drought resistance varieties of potato issmaller, by analyzing the data from each experiment, we can draw a conclusion thatfor the overall performance Longshu#3>Dingshu#1>Qingshu#9>Longshu#6>Xindaping>Qingshu#2>Atlantic>Favorita.
