The red panda, Ailurus fulgens is an endangered species of carnivorous animal, which mainly distributed in the southwestern China and the Himalayan mountain chain of Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Burma. Heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis is a parasitic roundworm that is spread from host to host through the bites of mosquitoes. Heartworm is a mainly kinds of parasite which seriously harm to red panda.In this study, with the methods of clinical symptom observation, pathological examination and laboratory examination (observation of microfilariae, hematological examination and antibody detection), the captive red panda were examined on the heartworm disease. The red panda infected with heartworm had the symptoms of lethargy, anorexia, anemia, difficulty breathing and coughing etc., in addition, the symptoms of jaundice and specific stink before death etc were followed.The methods of oraling ivermectin and applying selamectin on the scapular skin of red panda were researched on the prevention of heartworm disease. At the same time comprehensive measures, such as mosquito eradication and the stray dogs and cats driving were carried out. Results showed that both oraling ivermectin and applying selamectin on the scapular skin of red panda are effective to prevent and cure heartworm disease of red panda. It is safe to the female panda in the period of pregnancy or lactation of ivermectin. Compared with selamectin, ivermectin can give drug with the method of adding to the food of red panda and no need to fixation. It is more convenience.
