The Symptoms and the Influences on Quality of Life (QOL) of Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) of Spleen Deficiency Type by Umbilical Moxibustion with Herbal Medicine

Objective: Umbilical moxibustion with herbal medicine and Umbilical moxibustionwith farina were selected to observe the different influences on the clinical symptoms andthe QOL of patients with IBS of spleen deficiency type, and the scores of two groups werealso compared to the norm of China.Methods:100patients with IBS of spleen deficiency type were selected and dividedrandomly into two groups,50in each group. The scores of gastrointestinal symptoms,spleen deficiency symptoms and QOL were observed before treatment, during treatmentperiod and the follow-up period.Results: There were statistical differences on times of defecation and abdominaldiscomfort of the scores of gastrointestinal symptoms between the two groups. In thecomparison of different periods, the treatment group maintained good curative effects,while in the control group there were differences on abdorminal distension ofgastrointestinal symptoms between treatment period and the follow-up period, whichshowed rebound.After treatment, there were differences between BP (bodily pain), GH(general health),VT, significant differences between RP in the treating group and between RP,RE in thecontrol group.The QOL of patients with IBS were lower than the norm of China.Aftertreatment，there were no differences between the RP(role limitation due to physicalproblems) and RE(role limitation due to emotional problems)of the treating group and thenorm of China, and between the RP of the control group and the norm of China. In thecomparison of the two groups, there were statistical difference on SF in the after-treatmentperiod and significant statistical differences on BP,RP and GH and statistical difference on SF in the follow-up period.Conclusion: Both groups could eliminate the clinical symptoms and improve the QOL of thepatients, while the umbilical moxibustion with herbal medicine group had better effects thanthe the umbilical moxibustion with farina.
