Modeling and Experiment of Bipolar RF Ablation for Renal Sympathetic Denervation

Hypertension is a major global public health concern. An estimated30–40%of theadult population in the developed world suffer from this condition. Furthermore, itsprevalence is expected to increase, especially in developing countries.Diagnosis andtreatment of hypertension remain suboptimal, even in developed countries. Despite theavailability of numerous safe and eff ective pharmacological therapies, the percentage ofpatients achieving adequate blood-pressure control to guideline target values remains low.Much failure of the pharmacological strategy to attain adequate blood-pressure control isattributed to both physician inertia and patient non-compliance and non-adherence to alifelong pharmacological therapy for a mainly asymptomatic disease. Thus, thedevelopment of new approaches for the management of hypertension, especially those thatcan overcome those issues is long-awaited.This article gain futher insight into the new technic about Treatment of resistanthypertension—the technic we called RSD.The technic we now have is single electrode RFtreatment owned by Medtronic.But this technic has its own problems,such as we can notcontrol the current flow,it may damage the blood vessel that next to the electrode and soon.Based on the knowledge of single electrode RSD, this article bring out a new methodcalled “bio-electrodes RSD technic. We use Comsol Multiphysics to simulate this technicand get the temperature distribution in different voltage and electrode spacing, pick out themore reasonable proposal and provide a good foundation in the development of this newtechnic. Finally,the author did anqualitative test with two electrodes on biological tissue,thetest result shows that we can get the rule size and depth ablation zone using bio-electrodes,prove the feasibility of bio-electrodes in reality,provide a strong technical guarantee for thefurther refine of bio-electrodes techinc.
